![]() |
The Cango Caves discovered in 1780, is situated just 29km from the town of Oudtshoorn, South Africa, lies the underground wonder of the Klein Karoo, it’s principal cave is one of the best known and most popular tourist caves. |
The caves formation is the result of rainwater combined with acidic carbon dioxide from decomposing plant life works in way through imperfections in the limestone surface, the resulting chemical reaction, the water (now liquid calcium bicarbonate) causes an erosive effect on the limestone. The result of this erosion is an array of sculptured tunnels and chambers cut through the natural limestone bed for kilometers, producing an array of colourful underground formations, a process which takes millions of years.
The caves are open to visitors under the supervision of a guide, tours are conducted throughout the day on most days, there is two tours offered, a “standard tour” and an “adventure tour”. The adventure tour is best suited to young and athletic types as it does consist of crawling through very narrow passages and scaling rock formations and requires you to exit through a passage of no more than 30cm in height. Whether you opt for the standard or adventure tour both tours lead you to spectacular halls and limestone formations through its extensive system of tunnels.
