Mauritus General Information


Mauritius is situated at approximately 2000kilometers to the south -eastern coast of Africa and lies east of Madagascar on 20 S, 57.5 E. The land has an area of 1865 square kilometers with 330 kilometers of coastline. Inland features include a vast central plateau, subtropical forests, rivers, steams and waterfalls. Bordering this tableland are several mountain ranges consisting of diverse shaped masses of basalt testifying the volcanic origins of the island. Three peaks emerge: Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire (828mts) and Le Pouce (812).



International Airport

Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam Air Terminal, Plaisance(Code: MRU) is approximatively 3 kms from Mahebourg, 48kms from Port Louis, 80kms from Grand Baie, 55kms from Flic en Flac and 50kms from Belle Mare. Facilities include duty-free shops both on arrival and departure, bars, banks, and Post Office.

Population

At different stages during the course of the history of Mauritius, people of diverse origins- Indian (Hindus and Muslims), African, European and Chinese- have settled on the island bringing their culture language, values and traditions. The country today is a recognized cultural melting pot and is often cited as a perfect example of peaceful co- existing of the main religions of the world. The projected 2001 mid year population figure estimate is 1,200,000 while it stood at 1,93,565 as at December 2000.

General Information

  • Airport Taxes - Australia, Mauritius, Reunion and South African taxes are included in airline tickets. Non-ticketable taxes are at client's own expense and must be paid direct at airport.
  • Currency - The Mauritian Rupee is divided into 100 cents. We recommend Australian Dollars or Travellers Cheques which will be gladly exchanged at the banks or hotels.
  • Electricity - 220 / 240 volts using European twin plugs with round prongs or English square plugs.
  • What To Wear - Beach and casual wear during the day. Smart casual during evenings. During June to August, a light pull-over may be required for evenings. Gentlemen are required to wear long pants to restaurants and bars during the evening. Jackets and ties are not required except at Royal Palm over Christmas and New Year.
  • Customs Regulations - Passengers 16 years and over travelling to Mauritius are allowed the following Duty Free items: � 1 litre of spirits � 2 litres of wine or beer � 250 gms of tobacco products � 500 mls Eau De Toilette
  • Passport / Visas - A valid passport and return air ticket are required by immigration. Visas are not required for Australian passport holders. Other nationalities should check with the relevant authorities. This is your responsibility.   • Time Difference - Mauritius is 6 hours behind AEST and 4 hours behind Perth. Please allow for one extra hour during Daylight Saving.
  • Health - No medical vaccinations are compulsory if travelling direct from Australia to Mauritius. Clients travelling to other destinations such as Africa should consult a travel medical centre for further advice.
  • Insurance - Travel and Medical Insurance are strongly recommended to cover loss of baggage and personal effects, medical expenses and loss of deposit or tour fare through cancellation.
  • Shopping - Best buys include beach/swim wear, T-shirts, pareos, souvenirs, designer clothing and shirts including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and other brand labels, quality clothing, model ships, knitwear, children's garments, fabrics, silks, duty free jewellery, anthuriums and andreanums, embroidered goods, craftwork and ceramic products.
  • Credit Cards - Most hotels and shops accept American Express, Visa, Diners and MasterCards. It is advisable to check with establishments prior to purchase.
