Fiji Wedding

Imagine celebrating that special day in an exotic tropical setting... meeting your loved one on a white, sandy beach with a warm breeze stirring the air. The bride and groom may dress in traditional Fijian wedding attire made especially for them by the Turtle Island staff members. The cloth is tapa, made from tree bark and hand-painted with traditional Fijian symbols in tan, brown and black. All of the guests, along with the bride and groom, wear garlands of fresh, fragrant flowers around their necks.

The trumpeting of conch shells announce the bride's arrival on the wedding raft, called a Billi billi. Drums beat ceremonial rhythms as the bride disembarks and is escorted to her groom by two Fijian attendants As they approach the Fijian chapel, they are heralded by a Fijian choir.

Fiji Weddings After the ceremony, everyone participates in a Kava ceremony, an ancient tradition in honor of the bride and groom. The newlyweds are then carried onto the billi billi for their return to the wedding lovo, or feast, typically consisting of roast pig, fresh seafood and other local delicacies.

Followed by wedding cake, baked and decorated to your choice, then, under the soft glow of lantern light, guests and staff alike raise their glasses in a toast to the happy couple and continue to celebrate with everyone enjoying traditional Fijian dancing.

Fiji weddings aren't just for newlyweds. They're also a lovely way to renew vows.

On the Beach at Sunset

Many weddings at the resorts take place on a private expanse of beachfront at sunset. It is customary for two Fijian Warriors to carry the bride up the beach to her groom. The procession is accompanied by the blowing of conch shells and beating of Lali drums.

The marriage ceremony can be performed by a minister, priest or celebrant, as the couple prefers. On offer are three choices of music performed during the ceremony: our string band, the Fijian Village Choir or the Church Choir.

Fragrant tropical flowers add to the joyful ambience. Magnificent salusalus are made for both the bride and groom. Similar to sHawaiian leis, these flower necklaces are made of native flowers, tapa cloth and leaves. In addition, an exquisite bouquet for the bride and a boutonniere for the groom can be provided.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds celebrate their nuptials at a specially prepared gourmet dinner, with Champagne, candlelight and a special wedding cake for the occasion.
