Royal Pita Maha Resort Bali

Many centuries ago, after receiving a spiritual sign from the Gods, a Holy Man named Maharsi Markandhya embarked upon his journey of enlightenment which started in Central Java and took him as far eastward as the island of Bali. Throughout this journey, Maharsi affirmed his spiritual direction and goal by performing many acts of meditation, through which he receive continuously clear sign to continue his journey further east, finally to arrive at Mount Agung in Bali.

Upon his arrival at Mount Agung, Maharsi lost a large number of his disciples due to his oversight in neglecting to carry out an important religious ceremony. Following this, Maharsi returned to java and gathered more disciples from various Hindu sects. Upon his second arrival at Mount Agung, Maharsi carried out the required ceremonies to announce his arrival. These ceremonies took place at Pura Basukihan, later known as Pura Besakih or Besakih Temple, the mother temple of Bali, which remains the most significant and holy the temple in Bali to this day.

After receiving further divine direction Maharsi left Besakih Temple and continued his travel until he reached a magnificent north-south lying hill that was surrounded by two clear flowing rivers, giving the impression that the hill was being guarded by two dragons. This hill this today named Oos Gunung Lebah and the two rivers are named the Oos Rivers. A temple named Pura Gunung Lebah is also situated here as a divine place to worship the Gods. The whole area is called Tjampuhan, which in Balinese means “the meeting of two rivers”. This is now the location of the popular hotel owned and managed by Ubud's Royal family, Hotel Tjampuhan.

Maharsi continued his journey further to the north until he reached a shady forest where he and his disciples decided to take a rest. This area is where the current Desa Adat Payogan originated. From Payogan, Maharsi continued on to an area which is today recognized as Desa Adat Taro. Further to the north, Maharsi cleared the forest and also conducted yoga and meditation. Due to the great spiritual vibration in the area, a monastery was built alongside a place of worship.

This became the foundation of Pura Dalem Murwa. It was believed that this area bestowed blessings on the local people and was soon named Desa Adat Payangan.

Whilst Maharsi was in Payangan, a group of people came ask him for some blessed soil for the purpose of founding a farming village nearby. Maharsi proceeded to offer them some soil from an area adjoining Payangan. He noticed that there were many Widyadara and Widyadari as manifestation of Gods. Later the area was named Desa Kedewatan is an “area of the Gods”due to its heavenly semblance and spiritual significance.

The area of Kedewatan is greatly revered by the people of Bali, as it believed to be an area to blessed by the Gods. A temple named Pura Dalem Swargan is located here where the local people worship their Gods. Swargan comes from the Balinese sorga meaning “heaven”. A clear water river, known as Sungai Ayung, flows through the area, breaking the silence of the surrounding area. The word Ayung originates from the Balinese word ‘ayu' meaning “beautiful” .
