Inspired by the architecture in Bali, Villa Empat Puluh Dua is imbued with a monumental, Asian feel – which is also reflected in the name, Indonesian for number 42. Spilling in a series of levels down a steep hillside, the villa makes use of space with multiple timber decks and terraces that offer private, tranquil retreats for outdoor relaxation, as well as being an ideal platform for entertaining. The facilities and services available give Villa Empat Puluh Dua the feel of an exclusive mini resort where almost anything can be arranged, and complete seclusion is possible.
The villa is just five minutes’ walk from Port Douglas’ beautiful Four Mile Beach, and five minutes from the centre of town. It is surrounded by some of the most magnificent natural environments on the planet. Among the best diving and snorkelling sites on the Great Barrier Reef are found directly off Port Douglas, and the lovely fringing reef of the Low Isles lies just offshore. World Heritage rainforest surrounds the Port Douglas area, and further inland, the tropical Gulf Savannah offers some of the best bird and wildlife watching in Australia. The area affords opportunities for all kinds of active relaxation from game fishing to golf. High quality shopping and dining in Port Douglas are within easy walking distance, and the town’s Sunday markets are some of the best in the region.
Bedrooms
The villa has seven bedrooms, 3 king sized and 4 queens, that accommodate up to 14 people. The rooms are individually designed to reflect the classic Asian feel, using beautiful Designers Guild fabrics and Grange wrought iron and cane furniture imported from France. Timber louvers on all the bedroom windows protect against the tropical sun, and each room has a ceiling fan as well as its own air conditioning unit. There is a hotel-style phone system with separate lines in every room and additional plugs for internet access. All bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with bath or shower. L’Occitane products are supplied in the bathrooms, and luxurious Plane Tree Farm Belgian waffle robes and slippers are provided in the bedrooms.
Guests can have as much or as little service as they request. Relax and do nothing and have it all done for you, or enjoy the total privacy of having the house to yourself. Fridge and pantry can be fully stocked by arrangement – with Simon Johnson gourmet products in the dry pantry - and a chef service is available as often as you like. Provisions for continental breakfasts are included as a minimum. A daily maid service in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom is standard, but this can be expanded to include laundering and more.
Eating out in Port Douglas means, above all, tropical seafood: coral trout, barramundi and mud crab are specialities. Port Douglas cuisine runs the full gamut from distinctively Asian to Modern Australian, but the emphasis is always on freshness. Outdoor dining is comfortable even on winter evenings, so most restaurants and cafés are open and breezy, with an informal atmosphere and friendly service.
Request a chef from one of the best local eateries, Salsa Bar & Grill, who will come to the villa to cook for special occasions, or ask for Tony Sassi from the renowned Sassi Cucina, who can be on hand to cook up a seafood feast with the bounty of guests' fishing expeditions, otherwise indulge with chef Cameron Walton of Port Douglas Catering who can provide everything from the most elaborate menus for parties, to breakfast & brunches, or even a delicious pool side barbeque. At only 16 degrees south of the equator, Port Douglas has a tropical climate and typically only two seasons. 'The Wet' and 'The Dry'. The wet season, corresponding roughly with summer in more southern parts of Australia, lasts from December to about March. During the wet, spectacular storms blow in from the Coral Se, humidity is high, and temperatues average about 32 degrees celcius (89 degrees farenheit). In the dry season from May to October, the days are clear and balmy, with temperature peaking at 25 degrees celcius (77 degrees farenheit). Temperatues rarely drop below 18 degrees celcius (64 degrees farenheit) on the coldest nights. The sea is pleasantly warm all year round ranging from 23 degrees celcius (73 degrees farenheit) in the coldest months to 28 degrees celcius (83 degrees farenheit) in February. Individual air-conditioning units in each room at Villa Empat Puluh Dua make staying comfortable at any time of the year, and the heated pool is warm enough to swim in right through the cooler months.
Port Douglas is one of Australia's northermost towns and although relatively remote, it is also accessible. International carriers fly direct to Cairns and the hour's drive north along the Cook Highway to Port Douglas is a scenic route through thriving sugar plantations at the foot of rainforest clad mountains, on the shores of the Coral Sea. It is worth timing arrival in daylight just to take in the spectacular natural surroundings en route to Port Douglas. We can arrange airport pick up and transfer to the villa, or book a hire car to drive yourself. Alternatively, be met by a Quicksilver helicopter and speed over the rainforest to your destination.
