Itinerary
This glorious train revives the romantic age of rail travel in Scotland. All 36 guests enjoy luxurious State cabins fitted out in rich wood panelling, fine furnishings, tartan trim and ensuite bathrooms. Each night the train is stationary to ensure a good night’s rest. Meals showcase the finest Scottish cuisine and after dinner guests are regaled by a local Highlander with tales of bloody Scottish battles, myths and legends while relaxing with a rare malt!

Classic Journey | 4 nights Day 01 Edinburgh - Keith The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh Waverley Station early afternoon and travels north across the Firth of Forth over the magnificent Forth Railway Bridge. This is one of the first cantilever bridges, designed and built by Benjamin Baker in the late 1880s and considered one of the greatest achievements of the Victorian Age. Enjoy afternoon tea as you journey through the former Kingdom of Fife and across the Tay Bridge. Follow the east coast, passing through Arbroath, Montrose and Aberdeen before arriving in Huntly, where you will disembark for a traditional Scottish ceilidh at Strathisla. Rejoin the train in market town of Keith for an informal dinner and overnight stabling.
Day 02 Keith - Kyle of Lochalsh Enjoy a leisurely breakfast as the train departs Keith and travels west towards Inverness, capital of the Highlands, passing through Dingwall before continuing north to the village of Tain. Here visit Glenmorangie Distillery. Return to the train where lunch will be served as you travel towards Kyle of Lochalsh. Pass through Dingwall and Garve, Loch Luichart and the Torridon mountains. The train then follows the edge of Loch Carron through Attadale, Stromeferry and Duncraig. At Plockton you will have an opportunity to become your own guide and explore this picturesque Scottish Highland village. Be at one with nature, as you take a boat trip to see the colony of wild seals, and relish the magnificent views across the Isle of Skye to the Applecross Mountains. Otherwise take a woodland walk, visit the local art gallery or simply wander through the charming village. Afterwards rendezvous at the Plockton Hotel and enjoy a dram or two. Return to the train in Kyle of Lochalsh for overnight stabling. Dinner this evening is formal and afterwards there is entertainment in the Observation Car.
Day 03 Kyle of Lochalsh - Boat of Garten After breakfast the train departs Kyle and retraces part of yesterday's route to Dingwall. Travelling round the edge of the Beauly Firth and cross the northern end of the Caledonian Canal before reaching Inverness. Continue south to Carrbridge where you disembark for your visit to Ballindalloch, one of Scotland's most romantic castles. Set in the magnificent surroundings of the Spey valley, Ballindalloch has been the home of the Macpherson-Grant family since 1546. Return to the train at Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway for overnight stabling. A formal dinner is served. Afterwards meet Ray Owens, a Highlander who brings to life the stories of Scottish heroes. Listen to Ray and gain a true sense of the past.
Day 04 Kyle of Lochalsh - Boat of Garten After breakfast disembark the train at Boat of Garten and take the motorcoach to Rothiemurchus Estate. Choose from a number of activities: fishing, clay pigeon shooting, a guided walk or alternatively, you may simply relax by the fire at Drumintoul Lodge and admire the stunning scenery. Rejoin the train in Aviemore and enjoy lunch as you journey south through Blair Atholl and Pitlochry to Dunkeld. Disembark for your visit to Glamis Castle, Seat of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and childhood home of the late HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. Rejoin the train in Perth and enjoy an informal dinner on the move before stabling for the evening.
Day 05 Perth – Edinburgh After breakfast, the train leaves Perth and travels through the former Kingdom of Fife crossing the Firth of Forth over the Forth Railway Bridge. Arrive in Edinburgh Waverley station where your journey ends.
Highland Journey | 2 nights Day 01 Edinburgh - Boat of Garten The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh early afternoon and heads west through Linlithgow to Stirling. Pass Gleneagles on your way to the "Fair City" of Perth. Continue north on the Highland line through Dunkeld, Pitlochry and Blair Atholl. Continue to Dalwhinnie and disembark to visit Dalwhinnie Distillery, which at 1,073 feet above sea level makes it the highest Distillery in Scotland. Have the opportunity to sample the ‘Gentle Spirit’ of the glen.
Return to the train at Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway for overnight stabling. An informal dinner is served. Meet Ray Owens who brings to life the stories of Scottish heroes. His storytelling gives you a true sense of the past and how life in the Highlands has changed over the centuries.
Day 02 Boat of Garten - Perth Leaving Boat of Garten after breakfast you travel by motorcoach to Rothiemurchus. The history of this estate is as varied as most of the Highlands of Scotland. Its diverse landscape comprises low-lying fields on the river flood plain, open heather moorland, forestry plantations and majestic Caledonian pine forest. Enjoy a variety of activities including clay pigeon shooting or a guided tour of the Estate with one of the Park Rangers. Rejoin the train in Aviemore and head north to Inverness. Enjoy lunch as you pass Culloden, site of the last battle on mainland British soil in 1746. Continue east following the Moray coast to Nairn. Disembark to visit Johnston’s of Elgin Woollen Mill. Return to the train in Keith and enjoy a formal dinner as you travel south towards Perth, for overnight stabling.
Day 03 Perth - Edinburgh After breakfast, leave Perth and travel through the former Kingdom of Fife. Cross the Firth of Forth over the magnificent Forth Railway Bridge and arrive in Edinburgh Waverley where your journey ends.
Western Journey | 3 nights Day 01 Edinburgh - Spean Bridge The Royal Scotsman departs from Edinburgh early afternoon and heads west through Falkirk, Clydebank and Dumbarton to skirt Glasgow and reach the northern bank of the Clyde. Near the mouth of the Clyde estuary lies Craigendoran, the starting point for the majestic West Highland Line. Enjoy afternoon tea as you travel along the edge of Gare Loch and a view of Ben Arthur (The Cobbler) with its distinctive peak. Pass Arrochar where you will get your first view of Loch Lomond. The train descends almost to the water's edge at Ardlui, and then climbs up Glen Falloch for an impressive fall. Continue north through Crianlarich and the Bridge of Orchy. Enjoy spectacular views of Rannoch Moor before arriving in Spean Bridge for the night. After a formal dinner, meet Ray Owens. A Highlander, Ray brings to life the stories of Scottish heroes.
Day 02 Spean Bridge – Bridge of Orchy Breakfast is served as your journey continues west, passing through Fort William with views of Ben Nevis (Britain's highest mountain). Pass Glenfinnan and Lochailort, before turning north along the stunning coastline towards Arisaig. Here disembark for a romantic walk along the beautiful Morar Sands. Rejoin the train where lunch is served as you retrace the route to Fort William. Disembark and enjoy a relaxing boat cruise on Loch Linnhe. After your leisurely boat cruise, return to the train and enjoy an informal dinner as you head south towards Bridge of Orchy.
Day 03 Bridge of Orchy – Wemyss Bay Leave Bridge of Orchy this morning while you enjoy breakfast en route towards Glasgow and Gourock. At Wemyss Bay, board the ferry across to the Isle of Bute. The island embraces a variety of landscapes; seashore, moorland, farmland and forest. Following afternoon tea, explore the magnificent house of Mount Stuart, Britain's most spectacular Victorian Gothic house and arguably housing the finest private collection of family portraits in Scotland. Return to the mainland and rejoin the train in Wemyss Bay where a formal dinner is served and the train stables for the night.
Day 04 Wemyss Bay - Edinburgh Depart Wemyss Bay this morning and enjoy breakfast as you travel east towards Edinburgh where your journey ends.
