Cocoa Island is a small, private island resort designed for those seeking an easygoing, foot-in-the-sand experience. The rich, warm waters and bountiful coral also promise some of the world's best beaches, snorkelling and diving.
Wake up to an empty horizon from your over-water bungalow. As evening approaches, watch a tiny fishing boat ply the cobalt ocean. Cocoa Island offers indulgent therapies,Yoga, diving, gourmet cuisine and exciting excursions.
How to get there
Cocoa Island, known locally as Makunufushi, is located among South Malé’s coral atolls. The advantage is you don’t, as with many resorts, need to take a seaplane but a 40-minute speedboat transfer from Malé.
The 40-minute speedboat transfer from the airport at Male costs US$200 per person (round trip) or US$100 for 4 to 12 year-olds. Children 0-3 years travel free of charge. This is in a boat shared with other guests. For private transfers, it costs $330 per person.

Ufaa, meaning happy in Maldivian, is a foot-in-the-sand space with covered and uncovered seating. It flanks the resort’s infinity-edged pool, in natural wood and Kajan thatch, and is presided over by Australian chef, Daniel Johnson, showcasing the Malabar Coast’s rich gourmet heritage as well as modern interpretations of Southeast Asian cooking. The tandoor is employed to allow for fat-free, flavour-laden grilling of meats and fish. Healthy COMO Shambhala Cuisine is also offered.
Butlers can also serve a private dinner on your terrace, or in a silent space on the sands - lit by candlelight, under a simple tent, with the water lapping at your toes.

Activity Planner
Although most guests come to Cocoa Island to relax in privacy, there are others who spend their time exploring the local region – both above and underwater.
The diving is exceptional, you can also go deep-sea fishing, partake in watersports off the beach, like windsurfing or catamaran sailing. Resort offers beach drop-offs, dolphin and sunset cruises, a cookery lesson or guided snorkelling.
Diving in the Maldives is regarded as some of the best in the world with warm and gentle seas for the absolute beginner or experienced diver. At Cocoa Island, resort has a team of PADI instructors with in-depth knowledge of local waters, the coral reefs, wrecks and seasonal highlights. Diving kit is also provided, including Scuba Pro BCDs and regulators with 11 litre tanks. Wetsuits are long-leg and short-arm. The resort also provides Gull and Mantis masks, Technisub fins and Aladdin Pro dive computers. The compressor is a Bauer V-20.
Diving Seasons
During the dry season (January to April), currents tend to be strong with excellent visibility (25 to 40m). Most dives are at the channel entrance or drop offs where all the big fish can be seen, such as giant trevally and large schools of eagle rays.
Rainy season (May to December) brings rain and tropical storms, but some very good dives for manta rays. Visibility is reduced due to plankton in the water; however, this is also what most marine creatures feed upon.
