Hogmanay - Scotland's New Year - what is it?

What is Hogmanay? Hogmanay is the Scots word for the last day of the year and is synonymous with the celebration of the New Year in true Scottish style.

Hogmanay Customs
There are many customs associated with Scottish Hogmanay. The most common is the practice of first-footing which starts at midnight. This involves being the first person to cross the threshold of a friend or neighbour and often involves the giving of gifts (whisky, shortbread, fruit cake) intended to bring luck to the householder. Traditionally, tall dark men are preferred as the first-foot!
