London Review with Garry

London, an enthralling mix of the old and the new has kept visitors coming (and returning) in their millions. This city has something for everyone, from modern art to Roman ruins, from English pub grub to Chinese street stalls – there’s nothing quite like it. I was lucky enough to return to this metropolitan magnate earlier this year and, as always, my schedule was packed to the brim with sights, tastes, sounds and smells. I never seem to be able to see it all in one visit, so below I’ve also touched on some of my favourite attractions from past holidays and some that are still on my bucket list.

Buckingham Palace

One can’t think of England without thinking of its famous Royal family. This almost fantastical tradition is embedded deep within England’s history and within London itself. So, for you royal lovers, and for anyone who has an appreciation for fine architecture and rich history, there are some key sights in London that you can’t miss. In terms of the House of Windsor, it doesn’t get more grand than the famous Buckingham Palace. The Queen’s official London residence, the palace was originally built in 1705 for the Duke of Buckingham. Located between The Green Park, Hyde Park and St. James’ Park the Palace houses state rooms, ballrooms and gardens a plenty (only open to visitors in August and September when the Queen makes her annual visit to Balmoral). Of course, the Palace is worth a visit all-year round for the spectacle of the ‘Changing the Guard’ ceremony which takes place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace every day in summer and every other day in winter. It’s always worth a shot to see if you can get one of the guards to crack a smile, though I’ve never had any luck.

If that’s not enough royalty for you, Kensington Palace – the new residence for Prince William, Princess Katherine and their little Prince George, is only a short stroll away. Or, if the history is of more interest to you, then head to the famous Tower of London. Not to be confused with the Tower Bridge, the Tower of London has served as a royal palace, prison, armoury and even a zoo. Within its walls you will see the iconic Beefeaters and their pampered ravens, torture chambers, execution grounds and the priceless Crown Jewels. The eclectic nature of London resonates here particularly as from these ancient walls you can see the modern architectural wonders of the ‘Gherkin’ and the ‘Shard’ jutting out from the city skyline.

Tower Bridge

Houses of Parliament and the domes of St Pauls Cathedral

The Tower of London is just a stone’s throw away from the River Thames and a river cruise through the city will reveal wonders and famous sights such as the Millennium Bridge leading to the Tate Modern Museum, shortly followed by the famous Globe Theatre, then there’s Cleopatra’s Needle, the London Eye and iconic Houses of Parliament – if you’re lucky you may even hear Big Ben chime as you glide past.

Of course, it can’t all be seen from the river. You can hop off along the way and enter the hallowed halls of St Pauls Cathedral with its spectacular mosaics, mysterious whispering gallery and spectacular views from the roof of the dome – if you’re willing to brave the steep climb on the stairs. Or walk in the footsteps of history in Westminster Abbey – the resting place of such figures as Charles Darwin, Jane Austen and Sir Isaac Newton.

Parthenon Sculptures in The British Museum

These are just a taste of what London has to offer in terms of history and art. The city houses some of the best museums in the world, including The British Museum which contains art and antiquities spanning two million years of history. Or, if you prefer more recent artefacts, the Tate Modern is one of the most prestigious modern art museums in the world.

Globe Theatre
London is a city that never sleeps; with the famous underground and black cabbies to get you where you need to go your exploration of this marvellous city needn’t stop when the sun goes down. And what’s a night out in London without experiencing one of its biggest, proudest and diverse cultural outlets – the theatre. From big West End shows to traditional Shakespeare in the Globe Theatre, there is something for everyone. And, with the exuberant, culturally diverse cuisines on offer throughout the city, you’ll always be able to find a fantastic meal to polish off your night.

London also serves as a perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside such as the quaint Cotswolds, the majestic Stone Henge and the white cliffs of Dover. Don’t forget that further north, England’s neighbour Scotland is hosting the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from the 23rd of July until the 3rd of August. This coincides nicely with Scotlands most famous annual event – the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo, which will be running from the 1st to the 23rd of August. For both events be sure to book in advance as they will be immensely popular. If you're planning to visit next year don't forget that England will be hosting the 2015 Rugby World Cup from the 18th of September until the 31st of October.

The Stone Henge
