South American Escape

South America; one of the most vibrant, diverse and exciting continents on our planet; each country offers its own natural wonders, unique culture and history and together they offer the ideal destination for your next getaway.

Your best bet for an enjoyable flight across the Pacific is with Qantas Airlines. Offering a Business Class with fully flat bed seats and little pleasures such as a back massager and soft leather armrests it’s the best way to make your crossing.

Qantas will fly you into Santiago and then you continue on to your next destination. There are countless ways to tackle the continent – but you may as well start with the biggest - Brazil. Containing everything from lush rainforest to white-sand beaches, buzzing cities to colonial towns, red-rock canyons to thundering waterfalls, Brazil holds the largest collection of plant and animal species on Earth. Soak up the sun on Copacabana Beach with a caipirinha in hand, or soak up the view under the iconic “Christ the Redeemer” in Rio; explore the banks of the Amazon River or chug through the Pantanal wetlands.

You can’t pass up the opportunity, whilst in Brazil’s capital, to stay in one of the most famous hotels in the world. The Copacabana Palace Hotel is an Art Deco hub of luxury, positioned right in front of Rio’s most famous beach it has been welcoming the rich and famous since 1923.

Travel south to the border and you’ll find the rushing and roaring Iguazu Falls. A magnificent feat of nature, the mammoth falls cover the cornering borders of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Belmond Hotels provides an exclusive property the Hotel Das Cataratas in the midst of the falls themselves and offer an opportunity to be immersed in the thundering waters.

Further south, Argentina opens to present its multitudes of wonders. The highest heights of the Andes descend into rich wetlands and endless plains, glaciers continue their gradual path in Patagonia as flamingos dance in the Lake District. Then there’s the cities and, of course – Buenos Aires. Mid-afternoon tangos, cafes open til late, leather shops, neighbourhood meat barbeques and dapper early-20th century facades. Buenos Aires has something for everyone.

Don’t forget, that at the tip of this majestic nation there is a port that contains the means for you to embark on an once-in-a-lifetime trip to the end of the world – Antarctica. Just imagine – massive icebergs, gigantic glaciers, colonies of penguins, families of elephant seals and humpbacks and orcas gliding through the water beside your luxury live-aboard expedition vessel. This would certainly be a trip you would never forget and South America offers the ideal gateway to get there.

From Argentina there’s a number of ways to go; across the Andes into Chile - your gateway to the famous Easter Island - or across the Salt Flats in Bolivia, there’s so much more to explore. Beyond Bolivia you can travel back in time in ancient Peru. Naturally, the first ancient Inca marvel that comes to mind is Machu Picchu. Tucked away in the mountains this wonder is on almost every traveller’s bucket list. But there’s so much more to satisfy your cravings for history – from Chan Chan to Nazca to Kuelap to Lima there’s treasure scattered all over the country. Or, to see how the traditions live on, visit the remote communities beyond the city walls. Again, Belmond Hotels offer exclusive accommodations in these magnificent locations and their property which sits above Machu Picchu – the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge – is the only one of its kind. And of course Peru offers its own host of natural attractions from the Amazon to gigantic sand dunes and any which way to explore them. But, if its natural wonders you’re seeking – why not continue north and visit one of the most coveted sights in the world, a group of islands that sent shockwaves through scientific thought – the Galapagos Islands.

Machu Picchu, Peru
Sitting off the coast of Ecuador the Galapagos Islands are a nature lover’s paradise. It is one of the few places on Earth where the wildlife will simply treat you as one of their own. The ideal way to get up close and personal with the welcoming animal residents is a live-aboard cruise, hopping from island to island with new sites each day and a comfortable and relaxing means of viewing them. And, though the rocky islands may not be the picture of luxury – these vessels certainly may be.

The unique wildlife on the Galapagos Islands
South America really does have it all – cultural, natural and historical wonders are at your beck and call. And, the with the FIFA World Cup this year and the Rio Olympics approaching in 2016 the whole continent is invigorated with even more energy than ever before – so why not join the party?
