USA Highlights with Jess
The USA – a destination with so much to offer you can’t possibly see it all in one go. But I was lucky enough to get a taste of what this mega destination has to offer on my recent trip there flying V Australia. On my little US stint I hit up the two big ones – LA and NYC. Packed to the brim with things to see, do, buy, taste and tick off the bucket list, each city has enough for one holiday in themselves.
Jessica

Central Park and the view from the Rockefella Centre

I started my trip in New York City – the ‘Big Apple’. This city holds enough famous landmarks to last a lifetime, from famous film spots to iconic buildings – there’s a lot to see. We decided to start in the centre, Central Park that is. With some of the best hotels in Manhattan and an unbeatable location this oasis of trees in the swarming metropolis is a lovely place to spend a day. The park is massive, to see more of it you’re best to hop on a bike and enjoy the open air and relaxed atmosphere while spitting sites like the Friends fountain. Stop for lunch at one of the boutique cafes or maybe have a picnic with stock from one New York’s famous delis – cream cheese bagels and all.

Statue of Liberty and Times Square

If you can’t get enough of famous sites then why not see them from a new angle? The Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Centre (which has a super-fast elevator) both provide amazing views of the city. Make sure you do one of them at sunset for a view you’ll never forget.

If seeing things from above isn’t enough, then catch it from the water. I went on a dinner cruise on the Hudson River and glided past the Statue of Liberty herself and was wowed by the New York night skyline.

Of course, what you see and do in New York depends on where your interests lie, and for me that meant one thing – shopping. What I managed in my stay is not for the fainthearted; 5th Avenue houses shopping malls that are stories high, packed to the brim with designer stores. And, if that’s not enough, it’s roughly a 45 minute bus trip to the Woodbury Common Outlets for even more weight in your luggage.

New York holds it all, from the arts (I saw Chicago on Broadway and it is a 10/10 in my books), to history (the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero is a very solemn and poignant site, but well worth the visit if you are interested), to non-stop modernity (Times Square is always go, go, go but it’s an icon you can’t really miss); there’s something for everyone.

The Hollywood Sign and Santa Monica Pier
My second and final destination was the City of Angels, home to the rich and famous of Hollywood – Los Angeles. In terms of what area to stay I would highly recommend West Hollywood/Beverly Hills. Not only does it hold some of the best hotels but it’s close to a lot of the main sights you have come to see.  And there is a lot to see. In order to make the most of our time we hired a car and it was one of the best things we did. Driving in LA wasn’t too bad and it allowed us to make our own way to scenic points like the Hollywood sign. We drove along the coast and visited Venice Beach and Santa Monica Beach/Pier (which I definitely preferred) and moved from four wheels to two to explore Beverly Hills and its famous residents past and present (Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Christina Aguilera and Mick Jagger just to name a few).

Disney Land Castle and the World of Colour Show at Disney California Adventure Park

Then, of course, just outside of LA are the places that bring dreams to life for both the young and the old and everyone in between. Grab a park hopper ticket so you can enjoy the selection of theme parks on offer in California including Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park. The “World of Colour” show at Disney California Adventure Park is an absolute must, it was magical and made me feel as though I was a little girl again. If you do want to visit with children I would recommend staying at the Disneyland Resort and making the most of a three or four day pass – there’s too much to do in just one day. Also in the area are the Universal Studios, which were my favourite, and – for those dare devils – Six Flags Magic Mountain is a must.

Between just two cities I enjoyed a spectacular, fun-filled trip – both NYC and LA have so much to offer, I didn’t even get to see it all and the amazing part is, they are only two cities in a country that has plenty more to offer. If you’ve been putting off your grand USA adventure than wait no longer, there’s so much to see you’ll need more than one trip.
