Mediterranean Cruising

Cruising is an ideal way to holiday, you only have to unpack once, many are all-inclusive so you know how much the journey will cost you, they give you the opportunity to travel in a relaxed manner – no rushing for flights or trains or rental cars and they visit some of the most beautiful, culturally rich and diverse locations on the planet.

Europe in particular has an established cruising scene and it’s most famous body of water for luxury cruising also houses some of the continents top destinations – Mediterranean cruising is a must do on a European holiday. See countries from a whole new angle as your ship glides past their shores, experience cities in ways you’d never imagined with tailored shore excursions and enjoy the comforts of the luxury cruise lines who work with us here at FirstClass.

The Mediterranean and its ports have multitudes to offer, but as always there are the big names which have their reputation for a reason. Whether its history, art, dining, the scenery or all of the above the following Mediterranean power have to be on your bucket list as you start planning your next European cruising holiday.

The Grand Canal in Venice and The Main Palazzo in Palermo

Smack bang in the middle of the action is Italy, and its coastlines pack a punch. From cruising along the Amalfi coast to taking a stop to explore Rome from its port, Civitavecchia, Italy is the quintessential Mediterranean destination, however there are certain stops which are always a favourite.

Right up the top is Venice, a city so at home in the water that it has decided to forgo cars for boats it is one of the world’s most unique destinations. From fantastic campanile (bell towers) to Doge’s Palace or the wonderful architecture along the Grand Canal it’s easy to get lost in the maze of alleyways and feels as though you have gone back in time.

But some of Italy’s best summer destinations lie in the south and the famous island of Sicily has much to offer for a traveller who is looking to go beyond the simple Italian mainland. For instance, Palermo is a cultural feast with an eclectic mix of East and West, Arab and Norman its rich heritage is visible as soon as you get off the boat. From 17th Century palazzos to elaborate mosaics and eerie catacombs – there’s a lot to fill your day with.

Dubrovnik Old City

Across the water, to the north of Italia is a destination whose popularity ever increasing. Croatia offers one of the most beautiful and ideal cruising coastlines in Europe with beautiful towns and villages hugging rugged cliff sides that drop into the turquoise blue Adriatic. Dubrovnik is a must see destination along this coast, with picture-perfect medieval walls surrounding red-tiled roofs and narrow cobblestone streets the city feels untouched by time and offers something different from the archetypal European coastal city which you will miss as soon as you leave.

The Acropolis in Athens and the famous Caldera of Santorini

Continue down the coastline and you shall arrive in Greece. Its capital, Athens should be your first destination. Brimming with ancient history and famous ruins it’s a must see if you are in the area and it also serves as a gateway to the famous Greek Islands.

Of these islands perhaps the most famous is Santorini. Images of the white walled villages of the caldera which are awash daily with warmth from one of the world’s most beautiful sunsets will make anyone feel some wanderlust. And, without question, the best views of this spectacular island are from the water.

Mosque of Suleman the Magnificent, Istanbul

Delve further into the nooks and crannies of the Mediterranean and the wonders of the East are uncovered in Turkey. Naturally, if you want to get a taste of this spectacular destination the best place to start is in the heart of it. Istanbul truly is a crossroad, spanning two continents it is a unique blend of Asian and European cultures, which combine to create something of entirely its own class. Here you can meander through twisting bazaars, marvel at ancient mosques and churches and be awed by magnificent palaces – this is a cultural experience like no other.

Lazing on the beach in Barcelona
Continuing from Turkey and Greece, around the boot of Italy and continuing on South you will soon find your ship has landed in a place where afternoon naps are a lifestyle necessity, the food is like nothing else and the atmosphere makes you both excited and relaxed at the same time. Spain is one of the top European summer destinations and, when visiting Barcelona, it’s easy to see why. With wide, tree-lined promenades, glorious beaches, magnificent architecture and museums – not to mention the paella – Barcelona will show you just how lively and how rested the Mediterranean’s can be.

Cannes, France
One of the last nations which enjoys the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea is France and its famous Cote d’Azur is one the most popular stretches of golden sand in Western Europe. Along this coast are also some of France’s most famous destinations. Nice is one of the oldest cities in the Western Mediterranean and its beauty has been a lure for painters for centuries and just to its west is Cannes home to movie stars, yachts, palm-lined boulevards and superb dining.
Each Mediterranean destination has its own unique history, culture, food and scenery to offer and while this list could go on, it’s better to simply hop on one of our spectacular cruises and see it all for yourself.
