Hawaii Holiday with Garry
Hawaii is synonymous with paradise – cobalt blue oceans, pristine beaches, hanging palm trees, volcano shaped landscapes and famous surf; not only can you access the islands on some of the world’s best airlines but also stay at some of the most luxurious hotels.

Waikiki Beach from Heights

If you’re short on time – or want to really get an in depth feel of island life – then Oahu is your one stop shop. The Hawaiian capital Honolulu is an eclectic mix of traditional Hawaiian culture and the cosmopolitan side of the famous island state. Explore some of the history with a guided tour of the only Royal Palace in the USA – Iolani Palace. Directly across from the former residence of the Hawaiian monarchs is the statue of King Kamehameha I who unified the Hawaiian Islands under one rule and whose bronze representation is once a year draped in dozens of 30-foot fresh flower lei. For an unexpected dining option head to Chinatown with noodle shops, open-air markets, traditional herb shops and lei stands with a buzzing nightlife and music scene.

Waikiki Beach from the Sand and East Oahu

But what would Hawaii be without its famous beaches? And the cream of the crop is Waikiki. With world-class hotels, Pacific-Rim cuisine, ocean front dining, great shopping, and of course the beautiful beach itself make this your go to accommodation option. There’s a lot to do on the beach and off it.

Why not grab your hiking shoes and walk to the top of Leahi (Diamond Head) – an extinct volcano tuff cone and a national landmark. From its peak you will enjoy a panoramic view that extends along Oahu’s southern shore. On land you can also enjoy the Ala Moana shopping centre which offers something for every visitor – whether it is browsing through the world’s largest outdoor shopping centre or have a swim and surf at the 76-acre beach park.

Waimanalo Beach

On the water you can go catamaran sailing off Waikiki or head under water in a submarine excursion to explore the sunken ships, airplanes and reef structures teeming with life under the waves. Just next to the rolling waves there is the Waikiki Beach Gathering with sunset torch lighting and hula festivals on select evenings and fireworks displays every Friday night.

Other highlights around the island include Waimanalo beach, Turtle Bay and the historic Pearl Harbour (which is certainly a must see). For the best eats I found on the island head to Dukes Restaurant and Barefoot Bar on Waikiki beach, Beachhouse at the Moana or – for a taste of fine French cuisine then enjoy a meal at La Mer, Honolulu. If you enjoy golf I can also recommend the Turtle Bay Palmer Course and the Ko Olina Golf Club – from which you can catch a glimpse of Pearl Harbour.

Moana Surfrider and Halekulani Hotel, Waikiki

There are many world-class accommodation on Oahu, but my recommendations would have to be the Moana Surfrider by Westin and Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki, the Turtle Bay Resort or the Ko Olina Marriott

Ko Olina Marriott and Turtle Bay Resort

Oahu is your gateway to the islands of Hawaii, but with so much to see and so many waves to catch you may not have the time to leave this spectacular destination.
