Cruising the Western Mediterranean

In our November review we took you on a sea bound journey from the canals of Venice across the sun drenched foam of the Mediterranean Sea to the shores of ancient Istanbul before cruising to the beaches of colourful Nice in the South of France. But there is so much more to explore and see so why stop our adventure of the European coast ways there.  Climb aboard as we sail through the beautiful coastal villages and cities of southern France before chasing the sun to the wondrous shores of Spain and Portugal. Moving north discover the majestic and history steeped ports of the British Isles then cruise onwards to an endless collection of iconic coastal destinations spread along the northern seas.

The Nice Costline and La Negesco Hotel, Nice

Awash with old world charm and buzzing with modern life the coastal city of Nice is your gateway to exploring the South of France. Aside from the delightful local markets and glamorous beaches it is only a short day trip into the heart of the underrated Provence wine region. If you are a fan of the light and exciting profiles of garden herbs like lavender, rosemary and thyme than or if you are fond of a glass of Rose, currently accounts for over half of the wine produced in Provence, then a visit to the sunny vineyards are a must.

The South of France isn’t just a gateway to wine country it is also the first port of call on the journey across the famous Cote d’Azur! Whether you are on a romantic getaway, travelling alone or with your family these iconic shores will have something for you. Whether you want to sun bake on the beaches of Cannes and Saint-Tropez, chase the scent of freshly picked strawberries through the streets of Bandol or explore the medieval sites of Marseille, the South of France has endless potential.

From the South of France the cruising continues through the plethora of coastal Spanish delights. With endless stretches of sandy beaches, some of the world’s most delicious cuisine and a thriving history dating back beyond the 15th century, the coastal regions of Spain will not disappoint. While cruising through the area there is some must visit cities. The first and probably the most important of these is the vibrant city of Barcelona.

Gaudi park, Barcelona

The Catalonian capital is the beating heart of eastern Spain from the main thoroughfares of La Rambla awash with marvelous restaurant and bars, to Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece the breathtaking La Sagrada Familia it truly is a diverse and beautiful city.  The possibilities in Barcelona are endless you can spend your time strolling through the gallery of the famous Pablo Picasso Museum or watch the gorgeous orange and pink Spanish sunset from Gaudi park while sipping ice cold sangria, whatever you seek the iconic city will always provide.

Trailing the coast of Spain south through the historic city of Malaga and the Straits of Gibraltar our cruising adventure takes us north again to the shining ports of Lisbon. The jewel of the Portuguese crown and once the seat of a vast empire, the modern capital of Portugal is a city like no other. Old and new combine in a crashing symphony of sites and sounds where towering gothic cathedrals overlook modern bars and restaurants, which emit the mouthwatering smell of traditional cooking.

Lisbon is a beautiful city set apart from other European capitals by its simple lack of fuss. It is easy to stroll through the ancient paved streets or jump on an iconic yellow tram; and take in hundreds of marvelous sites and experiences. From Lisbon it is only a short sea journey along through beautiful blue waters to the countries second largest city of Porto. If you are looking for a romantic escape then Porto is a must visit as it holds the reputation for the most romantic sunset location in Europe.

Lisbon, Portugal and Bordeaux, France

From Portugal our journey north takes us back into French waters and along the coastline of the enchanting Bordeaux region. This picturesque area with its rolling green fields and vast vineyards is the world’s largest urban world heritage site and boasts its position as the home of some of the world’s best wine. If you are a fan of glass of French red wine or a tipple of Semillon or Sauvignon Blanc white, then a tour of the extensive Bordeaux region is an absolute necessity.

From the wine soaked coasts of Bordeaux it is only a short trip into the historic Normandy region. With a history abreast with conflict the area is a must for anyone with historic interests, in particular the solemn D-Day memorials. Even if you aren’t a keen history buff then the Normandy region still has plenty to offer, from delectable traditional French cuisine to the quaint picture perfect towns such as St Malo and St Peter Port that are dotted through the area.

To the West across the English Channel lies the British Isles, where most cruises will mark land sighting with the famous white cliffs of Dover before docking at the historic ports of Southampton and Falmouth. These ports are the gateways to exploring the whole of Southern England and Wales, with simple day trips encompassing most of the southern isles.

White Cliffs of Dover and Ha'Penny Bridge, Dublin

From England and dipping below Wales our cruising adventure takes us to the green rolling fields of Ireland. Making port in the historic city of Dubln you are open to a marvelous experience of the Irish way of life. Dance to unique Celtic music while enjoying a traditional Irish spread, with the most lovely creamy butter you’ll ever taste, and wash it all down with a cold pint of famous Irish Guinness. Short day trips from the coast into the Irish countryside are a must where you will experience the greenest and picturesque landscape in the world.

Continuing the circumnavigation of the British Isles to the North you can visit Scotland and experience the spectacular scenery and famous isles. A stopover in Leith gives you access to the famous stone city of Edinburgh and the Scottish capital will not disappoint. Other ports can give you access to famous cities like St Andrews and any avid golfer will need to take the time to tee off in the home of the sport itself.

Edinburgh Skyline and St Andrews Golf Course

From the British Isles cruises sail back to the mainland visiting Scandinavia and Russia. From hear you can climb aboard a smaller ship and experience Europe by river, one of the best ways to see iconic inland cities such as Budapest. Or if you have taken to the sea vibe a cruise across the Atlantic will afford you an opportunity to make the famous crossing to America.

Cruising the coastlines of Europe from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and beyond gives you a unique opportunity to taste the diverse mixture of cultures and scenery within Europe. No other place in the world offers this level of exploration in such a relaxed and luxurious way, so climb onboard and set sail during this European cruising season and experience the trip of a lifetime.
