Top Cruise Stops of the Adriatic with Garry
Dreaming of a cruise on the Adriatic? It’s easy to get lost in the offerings of exotic destinations but there are some stops that you just can’t miss.  From Venice, Italy down to Kotor, Montenegro the coast of the Adriatic Sea is full of the treasures of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Grand Canal, Venice
Grand Canal, Venice

One of the most iconic cities of the world; Venice is full of mystery, tradition, history, fantastical architecture and romantic dining. I was there at the beginning of the Biennale Arts Festival, one of the busiest times of years in Venice. The city was alive and buzzing, but the crowds were easy to escape once you got lost down the winding alleyways. I stayed in Palazzo Sant Angelo, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels group, this accommodation encompassed the only way to stay in Venice – luxuriously. If you prefer to stay in a larger hotel that combines modern facilities with old world charm, then two of the world's leading hotels, Gritti Palace or Hotel Danieli, are fantastic options.

Gritti Palace Balcony Dining
Dining on the Gritti Palace Deck, Venice

Recently renovated, Gritti Palace is one of the many wonderful places to dine in Venice – breakfast on their deck overlooking the Basilica Santa Maria is a must. Other sights to see include Palazzo Ducale (or Doge’s Palace), and San Marco and its Campanile.

Dawn Over the Rovinj Skyline
Rovinj, Croatia

We continued down the Adriatic to Rovinj – perched on a peninsula and surrounded by wooded hills this is one of the last true Mediterranean fishing ports. With cafés along the waterfront it is an ideal stop for relaxing before conquering the walk to the top of the hill for dominating views over the sea.

Split Coastline and White Water Rafting, Croatia
White Water Rafting, Split and the Coastline of Split, Croatia

Further along the Croatian seaside is Split, a main transport hub for access to surrounding islands – a daytrip to which is a must. Or, perhaps you feel like going inland where rapids await you for a fun-filled white water rafting expedition?

Dubrovnik Harbour by Night
Dubrovnik Harbour and City Walls by Night

And then there’s the jewel of Croatia’s crown – Dubrovnik. A walled fortress and an iconic destination of the Mediterranean this city is one that you will never forget. Walk the walls an take in the view, meander the white marble streets underneath the red rooftops or catch a cable car for the essential food and drink at the top of the mountain overlooking the city and its harbour.

Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor, Montenegro

But Croatia is not alone in its offerings of Mediterranean highlights. Kotor, Montenegro was a real surprise package. You enjoy a beautiful cruise through a fjord when arriving by boat and get to marvel at the quaint walled town that stretches up the mountain that just begs to be conquered. Ignore the taxis and buses trying to take you up and away from this beautiful location and simply meander the streets, envelop yourself in the sights, smells and sounds.

When planning a Mediterranean cruise of a lifetime it can be difficult to decide which itinerary is for you. But without fail, these destinations should be on your ‘must-see’ list.

FirstClass/Etihad Golf Day

The FirstClass/Etihad Golf Day teed off last Monday 01Jun15 amongst glorious sunshine and a crisp breeze for the first day of winter. The renowned championship course claimed a few victims during the day; playing very long with some fast, rolling greens, but overall everyone enjoyed their time at this spectacular course.

Mike Edgtton and Mike Sidgreaves with Garry
Mike Edgtton and Mike Sidgreaves

We had some truly outstanding players coming to the fore, with the scratch trophy being taken out by Mike Sidgreaves scoring an excellent 78 considering the windy conditions. Mike Edgtton took out the handicap trophy with a cracking 32 points. As always the most hotly contended prize was the booby prize. Peter smith held off a formidable challenge within his own group and walked away with the glory.

Our next golf outing is on Thursday the 3rd of September 2015 so save the date
