Escape to the Spanish Sun - Spain 2016 Feature

The Palacio Real in Madrid

A nation caught between two continents, Spain has been a marvellous melting pot of cultures all throughout history. Nowhere else in Europe can you experience a combination of gothic style architecture, roman ruins, modern artistic marvels, Moorish palaces and much more. Whether you are a seasoned veteran of European travel or just taking your first steps onto continental soil Spain is the ideal place for a European summer holiday.

Right in the heart of the country sits the capital of Madrid and for a first time traveller to Spain this city makes the ideal first destination. With a taste of every region of Spain can be found here from Galacia to Catalonia, a cacophony of flavours, sounds, dance and people will greet you around every corner. The city itself also possesses a rich and valuable history, bearing the mark of every culture to occupy it over the centuries.

Inside Palacio Real

From Arab style plazas to large breathtaking early Christian churches, the astounding architecture will keep you wondering for hours. A highlight on the historical tour of Madrid is the brilliant Palacio Real, the home of the Spanish royal family. The resplendent white palace is a treasure to behold on the outside and a marvel to walk within. Taking a tour is highly recommended as inside you'll find a breathtaking collection of lavish decorations, ornate clocks, intricate architecture and marvellous artworks. If Spanish art draws your eye in the palace, then a must visit is the iconic Museo del Prado, one of the world's premier art  galleries with an amazing collection of both Spanish and international masterpieces.

As you head south of Madrid towards the Straits of Gibraltar there is a noticeable change in the buildings and culture. The south is more laid back than the north and the locals truly embrace the cultural habit of the afternoon siesta. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday in the sun with a book and a glass of Sangria in hand, this is the region for you. The lazy afternoons and the warm Mediterranean sun lend themself well to the lavish style of Moorish architecture that is abundant in this area of the country, nowhere more so than in Seville and Granada.

Hotel Alfonso XII in Seville

Seville is a town buzzing with culture and overflowing with the archetypal joys of the Andalucian region and their perfected custom of enjoying oneself. Make sure to check out the Royal Alcazar, a breathtaking architectural achievement it will leave your mind reeling. While in the city make sure to stay at the iconic Hotel Alfonso XIII with an incredible 85 year history of first class luxury. The hotel itself is a magnificent work of art, astonishing visitors and locals for decades with its beautiful and distinctive Mudéjar style architecture of sweeping arches, decorative brickwork and ornamental towers.

East of Seville lies Granada, a smaller and ancient city that bears the scars of numerous conflicts that have been fought for centuries for control of the Andalucian Peninsula. Granada is a city alive with history, walking through the streets you are immersed in another time period when the Moors conquered southern Spain. From the rich brickwork to the ornate frescoes that line the narrow streets, each corner brings new and beautiful experiences. But it isn't the city itself that brings tourists to Granada, it is the iconic landmark that sits on the hills above, the famous Alhambra. The Moorish red palace stands as proud and brilliant as it did in the 14th century, the fountains still trickle with water and the gardens are maintained with the upmost care.

The Alhambra

No trip to Spain is complete however without a trip to her Eastern coast, and where better to start than the jewel of Catalonia, Barcelona. It is easy to see why Spain is one of the top European summer destinations when visiting Barcelona. With wide, tree-lined promenades, glorious beaches, magnificent architecture and museums – not to mention the delicious traditional paella – Barcelona will show you just how lively and how rested the Mediterranean’s can be. From the bustling shopping and exciting nightlife of La Ramblas to the daunting figure of Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona is a city that you can never tire of.

Gaudi Architecture in Barcelona and La Sagrada Familia

It is getting time to look forward to booking your European summer holiday for 2016 with the best specials coming out this month, and where better to start your planning than with Spain. Whether you are after a short getaway or looking for a starting point for an extended tour than look no further. FirstClass/Etihad Golf Day at Concord Golf Club

Teeing off at Concord Golf Club

The FirstClass team would like to thank everyone who attended our Golf Day at Concord Golf Club this month. The weather was spectacular and a great day was had by all those who came along. We had some outstanding performances during the day with some real standouts, like Andrew Fitzhardinge who was the handicap winner and Mike Edgtton who took out the scratch with an excellent 81 on the famously tough course! Special mention goes to Joe Kelly (Of Manly fame) who was runner up in both.

Tony O’Sullivan and Jocelyn hit the respective longest drives with Sean Thomson, Garry James, Mike Edgtton and Wensley Carroll getting closest to the pins. Wensley was also in the running for the hotly contended booby prize but Arby Haroutonian showed real grit and held off all challengers to take the honours.
