Cruising Asia with Silversea and Garry
Recently I had the privilege of climbing onboard Silversea’s incredible Silver Shadow for a 12 day Singapore roundtrip. I’ve sailed with Silversea before on a leg of their Australian navigation and the second time was just as good, if not better, than the first.

The Infinity Pool on the Roof of the Marina Bay Sands

My cruise experience started in Singapore with a pre-cruise stay. The Marina Bay Sands boasts an amazing location close to the best shopping and dining in the city. While you’re there a must visit is the Sky Park infinity pool on the roof. From this vantage point 57 levels above the ground you have a totally unobstructed view of the glittering city skyline below. You absolutely will not find a more spectacular photo opportunity in all of Singapore. Out and about in the city, the Gardens by the Bay is the best way to spend a day sightseeing. Encompassing the designer’s vision of a city in a garden, this breathtaking verdant sanctuary is a marvel to behold. This tropical garden city is truly unique and if you get the chance to visit be sure to make your way through to the flower dome and the cloud dome for unbelievable photos. A trip to Singapore is not complete without a stop at the iconic Raffles Hotel for their world renowned Singapore Sling. Drop into the Raffles Courtyard, rather than the usual Long Bar, to enjoy your tasty potable in peace.

After a busy couple of days exploring Singapore I was ready to relax and be pampered during my cruise. From the moment you climb onboard the Silver Shadow it lives up to every expectation, overwhelming you with Silversea’s award winning level of quality and service. One of the best parts of taking a cruise with Silversea is the size of their suites. With almost all of the cabins onboard sporting their own private verandas you are awash with space to relax in privacy and comfort. Each suite also has its own walk in wardrobe, so you won’t be tripping over your luggage all the time like some other cruise lines. The highlight by far of the Silversea experience however is the staff. All of the crew onboard are outstanding, helpful, courteous and constantly available; from the dining staff right down to the cleaners. Our cruise had a one to one ratio of staff to guests so we were never wanting for anything. What sets the experience truly apart though is the Silversea personal butler service that each suite enjoys. Your own personal butler, bedecked in the traditional penguin suit tuxedo with tails, welcomes you onboard and assists you all throughout your trip. Whether you are looking for canapés to snack on, a drink to sip on or even to have your shoes polished, nothing is too much for the outstanding butler service.

The Majestic Silver Shadow - Sailing Asia in 2016

Overall my experience onboard the Silver Shadow was very laid back and relaxing. While the staff catered to our every whim we were flushed with ways to spend our time. The choices of activities were incredible and guaranteed that boredom while onboard was just short of impossible. From sunbaking on the pool deck to playing cards in the onboard casino, lounging in the fully stocked library or sipping on a cocktail in the world class Connoisseur’s Corner; you’ll be sure to find something that you want to fill your time with. The highlight of the activities on board for me was the exceptional entertainers that frequented the Show Lounge, with a mix of outstanding classical and musical full production stage acts, and even feature films.

Verandah Suite Onboard Silver Shadow

The onboard dining is beyond exceptional no matter which of the four dining options you choose from. The tall poppy amongst the outstanding lot is Le Champagne Restaurant. The only wine restaurant at sea by Relais & Chateaux, it offers an exceptional six course experience celebrating the world’s most distinguished wine regions. Beyond the French style high cuisine of Le Champagne, the other specialty dining options include - La Terazza which is a true experience in fine Italian dining, and the Grill where you can enjoy a steak cooked on hot rocks right at your table by the pool. The Shadow also offers exceptional continental and regional specialities in the main restaurant.

Shwedagon Pagoda and a Group of Young Local Buddhists - The Young Girl in the Middle Kindly Shared her Breakfast of Red Bannanas with Me

During our cruise we stopped at several great ports throughout South East Asia including Kuala Lumpur, Phuket and Penang, but by far the stand out was Yangon in Myanmar. We stopped in Yangon for three nights and I was totally blown away by the beautiful city and its people. The bustling city is vibrant and alive with dozens of markets, incredible sights and mouth watering cuisine. The absolute must visit destination in Yangon is the awe inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda. This 2,500 year old Buddhist temple is a colossus towering over the city in resplendent gold. The world’s oldest pagoda is a true icon of Myanmar, with the best times to visit being in the early morning or evening to avoid the large crowds that flock there daily. While in Yangon we spent one night at the luxurious Governor’s Residence, the best hotel in the country. This romantic, colonial style mansion dates back to the 1920s and once played home to the rulers of Myanmar’s Southern States. It is a true experience in old world luxury combined with modern amenities and is an oasis right in the heart of the often chaotic city.

The Luxurious and Unique Governors Residence in Yangon

After we left Yangon behind it wasn’t long before our trip was over. Given the chance to cruise Asia again with Silversea I wouldn’t hesitate to jump at the opportunity. And now, seeing Asia with Silversea in 2016 is even better with incredible deals that offer more value than ever. Cruise onboard the Silver Shadow next year and you could receive a bonus 2 night pre cruise stay at a Shangri-La hotel in your departure city. As well as guaranteed free shore excursions and onboard WiFi throughout your trip. Ask one of our Travel Specialists for details.
