Lying to the east of Paris, Champagne is one of the great historic provinces of France and enjoys world renown for the sparkling wine to which the region has given its name. Savouring a glass or two of the famous bubbles in one of Epernay’s famous chalk cellars is the obvious pastime but on this short sojourn you’ll also visit the Gothic cathedral of Reims as well as exploring vineyards and Champagne houses.

This is an extension and must be booked in conjunction with another France itinerary.

This is an Abercrombie & Kent private journey and can be tailor-made to fit with your travel dates and built around your desires.

Accommodation: Le Château les Crayères (Superior Room)

Day Two

Reims

One of the most important cities in the history of France and home to the renowned Cathedral of Notre Dame, considered to be one of the four great cathedrals in France, Reims was also the site of the baptism of Clovis, King of the Franks, which set a precedence for coronations taking place in this city dating back to 987 A.D.  Reims, also known as the capital of Champagne, boasts no less than three exceptional UNESCO World Heritage sites: the 13th century Gothic Cathedral, the Palace of Tau and the Saint-Rémi Basilica – all of which you’ll visit today.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Accommodation: Le Château les Crayères (Superior Room)

Day Three

Champagne Region

Head out of the city today along the Champagne Route travelling through the scenic villages and rolling countryside of the Montagne de Reims massif. Your first stop is at the Verzenay Lighthouse, housing the Vine Museum where you have an introduction to the fascinating world of Champagne. From the lighthouse, enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. You then make a stop at a family-run winery, located in an ancient wine-growing village, producing grand Cru Champagne. Further along, is the village of Verzy, known for its forest of strangely twisted beech trees. Arrive in Épernay in time for lunch at leisure. The town is the main wine-growing centre of the region and both sides of the “Avenue de Champagne” are lined with the most prestigious Champagne houses such as Moët & Chandon, Mercier, Vranken and others. Visit the amazing Moët & Chandon cellars, the largest of the Champagne region. These are dug in the chalky soil and span approx. 28 km. End your visit with a tasting session. Before returning to Reims, make a final stop in the picture-postcard village of Hautvillers with its pretty wrought-irons signs. Hautvillers is the birthplace of Champagne since a monk called Dom Pérignon is said to have discovered the “Champagnisation” of wine in the 17th century.
