Peru in Depth, 13 Days Lima to Cusco with A&K

This well-paced journey showcases an extraordinary country in depth. History lessons await at every turn in well laid-out museums and on-site amidst ancient Inca ruins and colonial cities. Day One

Arrive Lima.

Arrive into the Peruvian capital with a transfer to your boutique hotel in the Barranco district.
Accommodation: Hotel B (Aposento Room)


Day Two


This morning explore Peru’s capital including a visit to Plaza Mayor, the official centre of the city, as well as the historic 16th century cathedral, and the Presidential Palace. Then travel through modern Lima to visit the fascinating Larco Herrera Museum which boasts an extensive private collection of pre-Inca ceramics – among the largest collection of its kind in the world .

Day Three

Lima – Arequipa (2,330m).

Transfer to the airport for flight* to Arequipa. Your afternoon tour includes the main square, the church of the Compañia de Jesus and the beautiful Spanish colonial monastery of Santa Catalina.

Day Four

Arequipa – Colca Canyon.

A scenic drive crossing snow-capped mountains to Colca, the world’s deepest canyon. The valley has pre-Columbian terraces and is an excellent spot for observing the Andean condor in its natural habitat.

Day Five

Colca Canyon.

This morning visit Condor Cross to view the birds as they glide over the canyon and around surrounding peaks. The rest of the day is at leisure for walks, horse riding, mountain biking or relaxing in the spa and thermal springs.

Day Six

Colca Canyon – Arequipa.

Return to Arequipa and board the new Andean Explorer sleeper train for the two night journey to Cusco via Puno.

Day Seven

Lake Titicaca (3,800m).

Admire the sunrise over Lake Titicaca and after breakfast take a local boat ride to visit the reed islands of Uros and the community on Taquile Island. A dance performance and craft demonstration is also included before returning to the station to board the train and travel onwards.

Day Eight

Lake Titicaca – Cusco – Sacred Valley (2,800m).

This morning visit the Inca archaeological site of Raqchi before arriving into Cusco Station where your rail journey ends. After lunch travel by road into the Sacred Valley, full of archaeological sites, Inca terraces and colonial churches. Visit Awanakancha, a centre where South American camelids including llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vicuñas are bred. Learn about their fleeces and ancient weaving techniques.

Day Nine

Sacred Valley.

This morning experience a unique visit to an Andean highland community to meet local Quechua-speaking farmers and weavers. This personal encounter introduces you to the lifestyle and traditions of these Incan descendants. Visit Maras, the former salt producing town and the Inca ruins near Moray.

Day Ten

Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu (2,450m).

A morning tour of the massive Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo before boarding the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes where a short bus ride will bring you to the ruins of Machu Picchu. Time to explore this fascinating site with your guide.

Day Eleven

Machu Picchu – Cusco (3,400m).

Opportunity to further view the site at sunrise or hike with your guide. Lunch is at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel beside the Machu Picchu ruins. Later board the elegant Hiram Bingham train to Cusco with gourmet dinner and cocktails served en route.

Day Twelve


This morning enjoy a city tour which includes the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, the San Pedro market and the Santo Domingo Temple or Koricancha, a Dominican Church and convent built on the foundations of the Inca’s principal religious building, dedicated to sun worship. You also visit the ruins of Sacsayhuaman outside of Cusco, a testimonial to Incan architectural skills. This ancient fortress where the greatest battle between the Spanish and Incas took place overlooks the red-tiled roofs of Cusco and spectacular countryside.

Day Thirteen

Cusco – Lima.

Transfer to Cusco airport for return flight* to Lima.
